Links I love – Modern Mrs Darcy

What are you up to this weekend? We’re cleaning up from a big storm wave this morning, and then hope to enjoy sunshine and slightly less oppressive temperatures this weekend. I’m looking forward to getting together with old friends, finishing school supply shopping, and seeing how my current mystery novel ends.

I hope you have something to look forward to these next few days, and that this collection of interesting reads and favorite things helps ease you into that weekend frame of mind.

My favorite finds from around the web:

Sony TV Acquires Two Novels By ‘Long Bright River’ Author Liz Moore For Series Development. (Deadline) I’m very happy for her.

What my friends and I call “the good underwear” is on sale at Nordstrom right now: the Hanky Panky Signature Lace Boyshorts (I’m 5’9″ and prefer a medium) and Natori Bliss Briefs (I prefer a small, but the medium works). My drawer is full of nudes in these two styles but I’m getting some pretty colors while the price is right.

This year’s longlist for the Booker Prize is here. (NPR)

How the Loss of the Landline Is Changing Family Life. (The Atlantic gift link) “When making a call to another household’s landline, you never knew who would pick up.” I couldn’t click on this piece fast enough because Will talks about this phenomenon all the time.

Your Louise Penny starter kit. (MMD) A beginner’s (or completist’s) guide to the beloved and long-running Inspector Gamache series, in advance of the forthcoming 19th novel The Grey Wolf this fall.

100 of the Greatest Posters of Celebrities Urging You to Read. (Literary Hub) Some of these took me back!

No, You Can’t Beat an Olympic Table Tennis Player. (New York Times gift link) “‘Some people who don’t play table tennis actually think they have a chance to win a single point,’ said Anders Lind, 25, of Denmark, the No. 62-ranked player in the world. ‘It’s cute. But it’s not true.’”

How seeing a ‘book butler’ reignited my love for reading. (Glamour UK) “The book butler sits down with hotel guests so they can ask for recommendations on what to read during their stay.”

6 (mostly) little things I’m loving for summer. (MMD) The small things bringing me a disproportionate amount of happiness, joy, or satisfaction these days.

These New Adventure Memoirs Lay It All on the Line. (Outside Magazine) These sound great.

Who else is in the mood for dresses that can transition from summer to fall? I’m loving this Old Navy Short-Sleeve Shirt Dress, the cult favorite Somerset Maxi Dress from Anthro, the remarkably similar (and much less expensive) Quince 100% Organic Cotton Tiered Maxi Dress, and the Quince Washable Stretch Silk Tiered Maxi Dress. These are all super easy to wear and super versatile. (I’m a Medium in all these styles.)

Meet One of the Most Prolific People on Yelp. (Eater) This taught me so much about Yelp and its Elite reviewers.

Why you should buy physical copies of your favorite books. (Popular Science) In case you’re looking for validation or an excuse.

Anne’s midyear reading check-in. (What Should I Read Next?) “This is, above all, a call to ask yourself, what do you want from your books right now? Because reading time is precious, and we want to help you feel good about how you are using yours.”

We’re in a New Era of Survey Science. (Slate) “Amidst a sea of surveys, it’s hard to distinguish solid findings from those that dissolve under scrutiny. And that confusion, some experts say, reflects deep-seated problems with new methods in the field — developed in response to a modern era in which a representative sample of the public no longer picks up the phone.”
