Doubleday Books has announced the launch of a new paperback reissue imprint, Outsider Editions, created and spearheaded by Doubleday VP and executive editor Thomas Gebremedhin, who will also serve as editorial director of the imprint. In his expanded role, Gebremedhin will report to Doubleday publisher and editor-in-chief Bill Thomas.
Outsider Editions plans to reissue underappreciated literary works of all genres—including novels, story collections, memoirs, and essay collections—in an effort to “take our understanding of the contemporary canon and make it more expansive, more complicated, and more just,” per Gebremedhin’s mission statement for the imprint.
The inaugural list will be published in Summer 2026 and will include Squandering the Blue by Kate Braverman, Natives of My Person by George Lamming, Journey to Nowhere: A New World Tragedy by Shiva Naipaul, Fixer Chao by Han Ong, and Beirut Fragments: A War Memoir by Jean Said Makdisi. All Outsider titles will be published in trade paperback format with unified designs created by Doubleday executive director of art and design Oliver Munday.
Gebremedhin, a former senior editor at the Atlantic, joined Doubleday in 2020, and has previously spoken out about the need for diversity in publishing and literature. In addition to his new responsibilities, Gebremedhin will continue to build his nonfiction and fiction hardcover list for Doubleday, which currently includes such titles as Stay True by Hua Hsu and Dream State by Eric Puchner, the latest Oprah’s Book Club pick.
