During Advent we are called to live December differently than much of the world would have us do. While retailers tell us how many shopping days we have before Christmas, we who desire to fully live Advent mark these days in a different way. But even when Christians are called to approach this season intentionally, Advent can still rush past without having the proper time to prepare the heart to celebrate the child Jesus, to make room for Christ in daily life, and to set our souls on his coming in glory at the end of time.
Lisa M. Hendey invites you to pause just five minutes a day to take up the centuries-old tradition of lighting candles and gathering around an Advent wreath in prayer with family and friends. Each day includes
an opening antiphon and a closing prayer, a scripture reading, a short meditationand questions to ponder, journal about, or discuss with family and friends.

Opening Prayer for the First Sunday of Advent
Light the first purple candle and pray:
Behold, the Lord will come,
and all his holy ones with him;
and on that day there will be a great light!
Pray in silence or sing a verse of “O Come, O Come Emmanuel.”
Reflection for the Second Sunday of Advent
Today, Isaiah calls us to “prepare the way” for Jesus, to “make straight” a highway for our God. But life is messy, filled with unanticipated twists and turns. Isaiah and John the Baptist encouraged their followers to make reparations in advance of Christ’s coming. In what ways do we need to prepare our hearts this season so that Jesus will find a warm welcome in us?
